Latvia ratifies UPC Agreement

January 30, 2018

Latvia has deposited its instruments of ratification of the Unified Patent Court Agreement with the Council of the EU on the 11th of January.

Latvia already established national law enabling the ratification of the UPC Agreement in parliament in 2017, which came into force on the 1st of January 2018. The deposit at the EU makes the ratification effective. Latvia is the 15th country to ratify.

Take a look at the Unitary Patent Map to see the ratification status of each country.

UPC Court
Latvia will, together with Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia, host a Nordic-Baltic regional division of the Unified Patent Court. The court will be based in Stockholm, but all countries provide facilities enabling local hearings and share the costs of the court. Legislation necessary to establish the court was also passed in 2017 and came into force on the 1st of January.

Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia had already ratified and passed the necessary legislation for the Court and the UPC Agreement.
