Italy near to full participation UPC

November 24, 2017

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has approved the bill on enforcement of the Protocol on the Privileges and Immunities (PPI) of the Unified Patent Court. Ratification of the PPI is the last step needed for full participation in the UPC.

The bill, which gives the Unified Patent Court the necessary privileges and immunities, now still needs to be promulgated by the president. Which is the ultimate step for fully participating in the UPC. Italy already ratified the Unified Patent Court Agreement and signed the Protocol on Provisional Application earlier this year.

Milan is to host one of the local divisions of the UPC. The same city is also mentioned as one of the alternatives for London as a host for a central division of the court. Ever since Brexit, the UK has not been certain it will still be allowed to host this division.
